Boston’s Museum of Fine Arts (MFA) offers art enthusiasts a unique chance to explore the genius of Vincent van Gogh through two distinct exhibitions, each capturing a different facet of his work and influence. Together, these exhibits create an unparalleled cultural experience, allowing visitors to delve deeply into the world of Van Gogh and his artistic milieu over the course of nine transformative months.
“Landscape and Labor: Dutch Works on Paper in Van Gogh’s Time”
December 21, 2024 – June 22, 2025
The first exhibit, “Landscape and Labor: Dutch Works on Paper in Van Gogh’s Time,” shines a spotlight on the Hague School, a group of Dutch artists whose work deeply influenced Van Gogh’s early career. Featuring exquisite watercolors, prints, and drawings, this exhibition showcases the artistry of figures such as Jan Hendrik Weissenbruch, Anton van Rappard, and Anton Mauve—the latter being a pivotal mentor to Van Gogh.
The Hague School artists celebrated the Dutch countryside, depicting farmers, fisherfolk, and rural laborers with a patriotic affection that resonated in a rapidly industrializing nation. Two early works by Van Gogh are also included, offering insight into his formative years as an artist. This exhibition invites visitors to rediscover the beauty and significance of a once-celebrated group of artists and their enduring impact on Van Gogh and his contemporaries.
“Van Gogh: The Roulin Family Portraits”
March 30, 2025 – September 7, 2025
The second exhibition, “Van Gogh: The Roulin Family Portraits,” focuses on a deeply personal and groundbreaking series of portraits created by Van Gogh during his time in Arles, France. Between 1888 and 1889, Van Gogh captured the likenesses of the Roulin family—his neighbors and close friends—in a series of paintings that reflect his deep affection for them and his passion for modern portraiture.
This exhibition brings together approximately 20 works, including iconic pieces from the MFA’s own collection and significant loans from prestigious institutions like the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam and the Musée d’Orsay in Paris. Visitors will also gain insight into Van Gogh’s creative influences, from earlier Dutch art to Japanese woodblock prints, as well as his personal struggles and dreams of building an artistic community in Arles.
A Journey Through Van Gogh’s Art and Life
These two exhibitions offer a rare chance to explore Van Gogh’s legacy from different perspectives. “Landscape and Labor” reveals the cultural and artistic roots that shaped his early development, while “The Roulin Family Portraits” highlights his emotional depth and revolutionary approach to portraiture. Together, they create a rich narrative of Van Gogh’s evolution as an artist and a person.
